
PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Alex “Sonny” Styles of Pickerington Central High School is rated as the No. 8 safety in the 2023 recruiting class. The fact that he’s not the nation’s top player is fine. There’s an abundance of talent in that class — it has 38 five-star recruits — and the top spot is typically reserved for quarterbacks, defensive linemen, offensive tackles and cornerbacks. The focus should be on the ‘top safety’ part, which doesn’t truly exemplify everything that makes Styles a five-star recruit. His 6-foot-4, 215-pound frame suggests that at 16, he probably projects out as a defensive end. Except he’s way too athlete just to have his hand in the dirt every snap.
