What Kyle McCord brings as Ohio State football’s starting quarterback against Akron


COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second time this season, a quarterback who has never before thrown a pass in a college football game will start for Ohio State. Kyle McCord will make his collegiate debut as the starter against Akron on Saturday. The true freshman from St. Joseph’s Prep in suburban Philadelphia warmed up with the first-string offense prior to the game, taking snaps from starting center Luke Wypler. McCord is only the fourth true freshman to start for Ohio State, joining Art Schlichter (1978), Terrell Pryor (2008) and Braxton Miller (2011). An Ohio State spokesman said the team has never started a true freshman at both quarterback and running back. TreVeyon Henderson is the presumptive running back starter after doing so against Tulsa and rushing for 277 yards. C.J.
