How ‘Rocket’ man Ronnie Hickman became Ohio State football’s stabilizer at Bullet


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cody Simon and his St. Peters Prep teammates likely believed they had a big advantage. The future Ohio State linebacker was a high school junior at the time, preparing to play DePaul Catholic in New Jersey’s tough Big North Conference. DePaul, with its usual quarterback out with injury, planned to put the ball in the hands of someone else — a receiver and defensive back. The night almost went in St. Peters’ favor. Except for the part where Ronnie Hickman moved back to receiver and caught the game’s only touchdown, and went back on defense and made the game-saving pass deflection. “I don’t like to admit this,” Simon said of his current Buckeye teammate, “but he kind of single-handedly beat us.” No one actually calls Ronnie Hickman by that name.
