Ohio State basketball’s Malaki Branham named Big Ten Freshman of the Year


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State basketball’s Malaki Branham has won what was a two-man race for Big Ten Freshman of the year. He beat out Nebraska’s Bryce McGowen for the award, winning both the coaches and the media vote. He averaged 13.2 points per game this season while shooting 49.1% from the field and 43.6% from three-point range. Those numbers jumped to 16.3 points on 52% from the field and 47% from three in Big Ten play. Those efforts also earned him third-team All-Big Ten, joining E.J. Liddell as OSU players to earn postseason honors. Branham arrived as a four-star recruit in the 2021 class rated as the nation’s No. 38 player and No. 8 shooting guard. He’s a Columbus native but attended Akron’s St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, where he won two state championships and was the 2021 Mr. Ohio Basketball recipient.
