COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football played so many young defensive players in 2021 that some natural improvement should show up this fall. Denzel Burke, J.T. Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer and Tyliek Williams all started to make an impact as true freshmen. Several other second and third-year players achieved their first regular contributions. The Buckeyes expected a better defense in 2022 simply based on so many regulars taking the next step in their development. But would it matter without the aggressive new scheme installed this spring by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles? If OSU’s defense makes a jump back into the top-25 range in 2022, how much credit goes to Knowles and new defensive back coaches Tim Walton and Perry Eliano?
