COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football controls its own destiny to winning the Big Ten East, reclaiming the conference championship and securing its third College Football Playoff bid in four years. Yet it might also be completely locked into the No. 2 spot with no chance of movement barring its own loss to Maryland or Michigan or an upset loss by Georgia above them. Ohio State has never taken the No. 1 seed into the playoff. It has held that spot in the rankings for only three total weeks. For prestige, and to ensure geographic preference of one’s semifinal site, the No. 1 seed is a worthy objective. The CFP selection committee appears to see tiers even among the four undefeated teams at the top of the rankings.
