Buckeye suffers unexpected losses at start of state title push: OHSAA state wrestling 2023 Division II highlights


COLUMBUS, Ohio — St. Paris Graham has won every Division II OHSAA state wrestling tournament since 2001. Buckeye came into the 2023 tournament with a chance to end Graham’s reign. The opening day, however, did not go as planned for the Bucks as they went 4-4 in the first round on Friday at the Schottenstein Center. Three of the four wins came by fall. However, district champions Jesse Badiu (138 pounds) and Todd Allen (285) were upset in their opening matches. “(We’re) not where we wanted to be,” Buckeye coach Mike Tecco said after the first round. “I’ll be honest, I thought we’d go 7-1 that round. When you get down here, you’ve got to be ready to go. Hopefully the four that will be ready to go, no problem. We count on those guys a lot.
