
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football is again outspending the rest of the sport for its coaching staff — at least among schools required to make that data available. According to USA Today’s annual aggregation of salary data, Ohio State’s assistants pool of $9.27 million edged two-time defending national champion Georgia ($9.23 million) for highest among public universities. Such data is typically collected through public records requests. Private schools such as USC and Miami and even some public schools such as Penn State are not required to release that information. Regardless, it reflects the commitment OSU made to remain among the College Football Playoff’s main contenders this season. That has been most directly rewarded on defense, where coordinator Jim Knowles ($1.96 million) is the third highest-paid assistant among FBS public schools.
