Scholarships open for Ohio State football

The school announced today that offensive tackle Grant Schmidt will transfer and incoming three-star Baltimore cornerback Kareem Felder will not enroll on time, leaving the Buckeyes with 84 scholarship players for the fall — one under the NCAA-mandated limit. The moves also gives Ohio State a little more wiggle room in its far bigger numbers crunch next season. The Buckeyes have only six scholarship seniors set to come off the books and at least 14 new scholarship players arriving, leaving them, as of now, with 90 players projected on the 2017 roster. (Chances are a few players will leave early for the NFL, but OSU is hardly done compiling its 2017 recruiting class.) Schmidt, the first Buckeyes player from South Dakota, wrapped up his second spring with Ohio State after enrolling early in 2015. Felder, a signee in this year’s recruiting class, is expected to attend prep school this season before potentially joining the Buckeyes.
