Michigan football alums recount team’s wild win vs Ohio State in 1988


The only way John Kolesar wasn’t going to return Ohio State’s kickoff late in the fourth quarter in 1988 was if the Buckeyes kicked the ball through the back of the end zone. With 1:37 to play, the senior wideout received the kickoff just inside his own end zone and returned it to the OSU 41-yard line. Two plays later, Kolesar caught a 41-yard touchdown pass that gave Michigan a 34-31 victory in Columbus. “We didn’t get the ball thrown a whole lot to us, so we got to make it count,” Kolesar said, referring to head coach Bo Schembechler’s run-first offense. “We got to make sure we catch that ball, and it just so happens that we crossed the goal line and we got in the end zone.” In a virtual, fan-interactive event Thursday night, Kolesar and 1988 teammates Erick Anderson, Jarrod Bunch and Leroy Hoard shared memories from…
