COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cautious confidence was the order of the day on Sept. 16, when the Big Ten declared fall football would return. On that day, according to coronavirus tracking numbers from John Hopkins University, the rolling 7-day average of coronavirus cases in Ohio was 1,033. That day of hope arrived a little over a month after the Big Ten had announced the cancellation of fall sports, including football, on Aug. 11. On that day of disappointment, the rolling 7-day average for Ohio cases was 1,095. On Tuesday, the rolling 7-day average in Ohio was 6,508 cases. On Wednesday, Ohio State’s scheduled Saturday game at Maryland was cancelled, but not because of what was happening in Ohio. Ohio State’s football team, while not releasing testing figures, has managed to stave off the virus. The proof is that the Buckeyes haven’t stopped playing and practicing football since that September restart decision.…
